Story 4

For the past 52 years the ultimate spectator sport has involved the Texas State University and its students. This event is sponsored by the Kappa Sigma Alumni Association and is called FITE NITE, this year it’s being held at the Cotton Gin in Maxwell, TX on April 27, 2012.

FITE NITE has been a long standing tradition that started off as a 1 night elimination style boxing tournament that has evolved into a fully sanctioned amateur event for boxers and students who want to participate.

While originally held at old Evans auditorium, the event has continued to grow and was moved to the Cotton Gin in Maxwell, TX which is capable of holding thousands of people.

Three years ago, a decision was made to add girl vs. girl fights as the main events, adding extra excitement to the atmosphere.

While tickets have not yet gone on sale, they will be available as general admission and V.I.P. tickets for anyone who would like to purchase online at the FITE NITE website.

According to the FITE NITE website, www.fitenite.com/sponsors, there are 17 sponsors. A sponsorship packet is online to print for any company that would like to be a sponser.

For extra information on sponsors you can contact Trey Buhidar at eb1301@txstate.edu

If you are interested in participating in the ring for FITE NITE, Chris Wise is the Director of Fighter Registration.

Wise stated that this is his first year being a director in the event and explained the rules that applied to the competitors.

“It’s three 1 minute rounds, there aren't weight classes, we’ll try to match you up against someone that is similar in height, weight, and experience,” said Wise.

When asked about the criteria in judging the bout,

“It’s judged by USA boxing, they focus mainly on proper form, defense, and hits.”

Wise also stated that there would be corner men to help the combatants between rounds with advice and water.

One of the corner men is local boxing gym owner, Manny Sepeda.

Manny Sepeda owns the Fight Factory gym in San Marcos http://www.texasfightfactory.com

Manny has won countless boxing awards, such as multiple Golden Gloves and is a former I.B.A. featherweight champion.

Sepeda stated that he has 17 members of gym already signed up for FITE NITE.

Business in his gym picks a few weeks before the event is held so beginners can get an idea of what to expect when they fight.

One of the members who will be competing is a University of Texas nursing student, George Garcia.

George had been training in boxing for 2 months and decided to sign up after seeing a flyer at his gym.

“I really want to challenge myself, and get my feet wet before I take bigger fight.” George said, when asked why he was competing.

With a little over a month before the event takes place, there is still time left to sign up as a competitor or sponsor.
