Story 4
The recently
popular rock group fun. performed Friday night at Stubb’s BBQ at a closing
concert for the annual South by Southwest music, film and interactive festival
held in Austin.
The band
took to the stage at 11:30 p.m. and played about five songs including their
number one iTunes hit, “We are Young”. Of
the nine bands playing at Stubb’s that night fun. seemed to receive the most
hype.
“I came to
see Avalanche City, but I decided to stay when I heard fun. was playing too,”
said Monica Young of McAllen, Texas.
Fun. has only recently become a
well-known indie and alternative rock band. Their rise to fame began after one
of their single was featured on the television show Glee.
The band’s
song “We are Young” also topped the charts on the Billboard Hot 100.
During SXSW,
mtvU held its Woodie awards ceremony at which fun. performed on Wednesday.
Although
fun. may have seemed to please the crowd, there were some who didn’t enjoy the
concert so much.
“I’ve seen
better concerts they (fun.) definitely weren’t my favorite to see,” said Jamie
Garza of Las Cruces, N.M.
Groups of
friends and families waited in line to see fun. and other bands perform as well
as enjoy the drinks and Stubb’s bar-b-q.
“I have been
fighting the crowds for a couple nights already. It’s been a good time here,”
said Derek Walker of Dallas, Texas. “I brought my brother along with me.”
The concerts
on closing night at SXSW drew some of the biggest crowds of the week. Attendance at
SXSW grew from 19,000 in 2011 to about 24,000 this year.
“The traffic
and parking were awful, but it was worth it to check out these concerts on the
last night,” said Alexa Sotto of San Antonio, Texas.
