Associated Student Government elections coming soon

Texas State University’s Associated Student Government(ASG) will hold its student body election April and April 4, 2012. The election will determine the student body president, vice president, senators, and Graduate House of
Representatives for the 2012-2013 academic year.

The ASG mission is to “change the campus community through connecting, learning and serving.” All of the 60 members strive to represent the student body on campus and to the school system.

Although aware of the ASG, some students feel they don’t have enough information to make educated votes.

“I feel like they don’t inform us enough about what they do,” said Evan Floyd, business marketing junior. “I feel like they stand behind the scenes.”

Floyd does not plan to cast a vote because he feels ill informed, and that his vote will be unimportant.

The ASG tries to keep strong communication lines with students through Bobcat Updates, meetings open to the public, and open door office hours.

“If the students want an effective and responsible student government, then it is imperative that they reach out to us and voice concerns,” said Albert DeGarmo, student body president. “We are not able to know every problem a student is encountering unless they are able to inform us.”

Nicky Visser, current senator at large candidate, suggested making opportunities to speak with the ASG more convenient by hosting a “Voice Your Opinion” booth in the Quad once a month. . Students would be able to submit written concerns for the ASG to review.

Visser, marketing with professional sales senior, became involved with the ASG because she strives to be involved with Texas State University and understand where it has been, where it is, and where it is going in the future. Visser voted in the 2011 election and stressed the importance of participating in the 2012 election.

“It is highly imperative that students become involved in this year’s election,” said Visser. “Our university is in such a high-growth stage that these people truly will determine the future of Texas State University.”

With the election so close, both current officers and running candidates alike encourage the student body to vote.

“If the students want there to be a responsible and effective group that represents them on crucial campus issues, it is crucial that they vote,” said President DeGarmo. “It is not an option for the students to vote, but rather a responsibility.”

Students may vote at a poll in the quad or at Lyndon B. Johnson Student Center on voting days from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or online. Online voting will be linked to the Texas State University home page, and be open from April 3 at 8 a.m. to April 4 at 5 p.m.
